Naxos 30 April

Chora is the port for Naxos, the white sandy beaches being some 10km or more away.  The port area is lined with tourist cafes and some more frequented by locals, especially those with playground or ride-on facilities next door.  Our lunchtime stroll ended at a cafe beside the water, one of many but cheaper than others. We each had 2 pork gyros on pita and a large draught beer, very good.  Later we walked through the old town but most of the tiny shops were closed on Sunday.  We slept in the afternoon because the Hf group would arrive at 11pm and we joined them for dinner, an excellent vegetable soup and mixed salad.

Our hotel is named after the area above the port, Grotta.  There is an easy path down to the town and the view is dominated by the massive marble lintel from the gate of the Temple of Apollo, usually referred to as the Portara.  The steps up to the Portara are bordered by vivid flowers of Carpobrotus edulis, Pigface, a  South African plant.   Green lizards  (Lacerta trilineata) sunbathed and darted for cover on approach; sparrows and gulls were the only birds seen.

Grotta - our hotel is the mustard one.
